The major subforms of the coking process are (1) the delayed coking process and (2) the fluid coking process. To a large extent, most cokers are constructed of Type 410 stainless steel, either claded (i.e., bonded with another metal) or solid, except those with high naphthenic acid content, which would normally require Type 316.
Coking is the heating of coal in the absence of oxygen to a temperature above 600 °C, to drive off the volatile components of the raw coal, leaving a hard, strong, porous material of high carbon content, called coke.
